When entering any marketplace, the business name you choose can have a long lasting effect on potential clients of your business and the services the business offers. I wanted “Dimension Eighty Eight” to be a company that would enable its clients to have a range of services covering Retail, HR and Training.

In the beginning I could have chosen to use my name and named the company Michael Coe HR and Training Ltd. I did think about this very carefully but then googled the name Michael Coe and it came up with so many Michael Coe’s, that I decided another name would be more appropriate for a new business.

As my business was going to offer a variety of services to its clients, I needed a business name that would cover not only the now but future growth and development. During my morning meditation session I began to visualise my new business and its spiritual essence. I began to visualise the word “Dimension” and then the number 88. Then putting them together the name “Dimension Eighty Eight” was born.

But what did it mean?

The word dimension:

I looked in the dictionary for the word “Dimension” which in short can be associated with measurement in terms of linear extension, flat surfaces and co-ordinates specifying the position of point. In physics the word “Dimension” can be an expression for a derived physical quantity such as mass, length, time, or raised to an appropriate power.

The number 88:

Then I looked at the meaning behind the number 88. The number 88 has very positive meanings to it and my reason for using the number 88 is associated with the meaning in Chinese Culture. Although I am not Chinese I do have a great respect for their culture and spiritual awareness.

In Chinese culture the number 88 symbolises fortune and good luck. Since the 8 word is similar to the word Fa (implied wealth in Mandarin and Cantonese). The number 8 is considered to be the luckiest in Chinese culture and the more 8′s there are  in a price, number plate and so on will mean more luck and wealth to the owner.

The shape of the number 8 in Chinese means a person will have a great, wide future, as the character starts narrow and gets much wider toward the bottom.

The meaning behind the words ”Dimension Eighty Eight” as a business is to offer its clients new ways of looking at business situations from many different angles. By plotting new co – ordinates specifically to the position of point and using a raised appropriate power, clients can grow their businesses and people to out perform their competitors.

One of the main reasons for basing the company in Ipswich was due to its excellent road and rail links, with its proximity to London (approx 70 miles). Also the road network allows good travel times to the Midlands and wider UK.

Michael Coe from Dimension 88 attended a half day training session to train as an Enterprise Mentor with Get Mentoring in association with the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI Group).

The training was an Introduction to Enterprise Mentoring and covered the role of the mentor; and explained how effective enterprise mentoring can help a new start up business to grow,develop and survive. In a time when the economy needs a boost, Enterprise Mentoring is a great way to support new business growth by sharing knowledge,skills and experiences with an individual who has taken the step of becoming and Entrepreneur.

The types of mentoring.

Mentoring  can be conducted in a number of ways. The most important aspect of mentoring is to establish a good rapport with a mentee.  Mentees can discuss their business plans in confidence and receive guidance from an experienced business person. Mentoring can be conducted by:

Face to face, one to one mentoring.

The vast majority of mentoring is conducted face to face and on a one to one basis. The mentor can focus 100% on the opportunities of the individual mentee.

Face to face group mentoring.

Face to face group mentoring is  becoming a popular way of mentoring. A group of about six and eight business owners get together to discuss their opportunities. The group works as a sounding board and the mentor can examine issues from different perspectives.

Telephone mentoring.

Telephone mentoring is usually part of a blended mentoring approach used with face to face mentoring.

e-mentoring.

e-mentoring is often a part of  a blended mentoring structure. However e-mentoring can also be used on its own.

Mentoring is both rewarding for the mentor as it is for the mentee, as both parties can learn from one another.The mentoring relationship is voluntary for both parties and is designed for a set period of sessions. However the relationship can be ended by either the mentee or the mentor.

The Big Skills awards were all about having a go at something new and recognising people who have made big changes in their lives through learning.

Sixteen people were shortlisted from the nominations and attended a ceremony in Ipswich on Wednesday 17th June 2009.

The winner of the overall award for Excellence was myself, Michael Coe; who also won the Employer Commitment award for – The Entertainer.

The Judges said Michael had”Gone the extra mile to inspire his staff to improve their own levels of learning.”

“His investment in his work force is remarkable and inspiring,” they added” Not only does this benefit his business, it improves his staff with a great grounding in their career – experience and qualifications. He is a true example of excellence in changing the lives of others through learning.”

What Michael did next.

During April 2011 I decided to use my HR and Training Skills to start my own Company – Dimension Eighty Eight. I am now offering my skills and service to the retail trade as a consultant and troubleshooter.

However for new employers / start up businesses, this is always a question I am asked on a regular basis. I know from experience that everyone you ask will give the same answer,

‘I am not sure you could phone………..”

So for new employers and start ups and as a refresher for all, here are the hourly wage rates you should be paying your employees.

21 and over: £6.08

18 – 20 £4.98

16 – 17 £3.68

These are correct at January 2012. However these hourly rates are amended from time to time by the Government. It is your responsibility as an employer to keep up to date.

The idea or concept for Emergency HR began when I was out at a Business meeting and networking with other business owners who had needed HR advice quickly but did not know who to turn too in their hour of need!

Dimension Eighty Eight has come up with this concept to assist and advise Small Medium Enterprises who need to turn to an HR professional for advice when faced with one off HR / People Management issues.

The Emergency HR service has been used on several occasions and is beginning to prove popular as business owners do not have to sign up to lengthy long term commitments.
