Steps Ahead Mentoring Project – CIPD

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development CIPD have designed a project to help young people improve their employability skills.

It offers young people up to six one to one mentoring sessions to help them to improve their employability , boost their confidence and find work.

The project objectives:

1. To improve the employability of young job seekers and ultimately bring them closer to the labour market.

2. To foster better understanding by the HR profession of the challenges young people face.

3.To give HR Practitioners the opportunity to develop their coaching and mentoring skills.

The CIPD work in partnership with Job centre plus to connect with 18 – 24 year olds who are claiming job seekers allowance. Mentors are CIPD members who work in HR and Training and volunteer their time.

Dimension Eighty Eight

Michael Coe who owns Dimension Eighty Eight HR and Training Limited in Ipswich, Suffolk is a CIPD Associate member and a “Steps Ahead Mentor”

Michael Said:

“This project really helps young people to find work and gives them the confidence boost that they need. The majority of young people who are mentored on the project have not been in some form of employment or further education (NEETS) and so their employability skills need to be improved.

A mentee spends up to six, one to one sessions with myself on a weekly basis. The sessions can last up to 1 hour or more depending on how much assistance the individual requires. In the sessions we cover CV Writing, how to find work in their chosen sector and interview techniques.

In these difficult economic times it is important for young people to gain employment and HR professionals like myself can assist them by using our skills and experience of the world of work.

I am pleased that Dimension Eighty Eight can help young people to find work through this scheme and work alongside the CIPD and Job Centre plus. Although Dimension Eighty Eight is a relatively new HR and Training Company it is important for my new business to work within the community by putting something back.”

One of Michael’s Mentees said:

“Michael was a great help to me as a Mentor, both in helping me find work and above all helping me to gain confidence. Each week he helped me  with a step by step guide and encouraged me to try something new.

Without Michael’s help I don’t think I would have been able to get to where I am today and I can only thank him for the understanding and commitment he took in helping me. This scheme is a great success.”
